Estances VII, for Orchestra, was comissioned by the Institut Valencià de la Música in 2003.

Premiere in May, 2003, Valencia, Palau de la Música de Valencia. Subscription Concert Series, Orquesta de Valencia, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, conductor.

In 2011 the piece was adapted and performed, in a different order of its original seven parts, for the ballet Suite 4: Stanzas, with Ramón Oller as choreograper.

This composition is inspired by poem Nº 7 of the First Book of Estancias, by the Catalan poet Carles Riba (Barcelona, 1893-1959), but also also presents various influences that are pointed out in seven clearly differentiated parts whose components are different ways of music conceptions like melody, counterpoint, energy, calm, etc… seven places or seven ports, seven rooms where the composer has lived and acquired his experiences, but and also seven ‘stanzas’, - the translation of ‘estancia’ could be room, space, but also ‘stanza, or strophe, or verse,.... A place to be. A place to rest. A place to know.

These are the last four verses of the poem:

It does nothing: I have loved you carnal and eternal;
The shadow will flee, but already my only destiny
it will be mine that does not die, it will die with me,
that you alone, oh Love, you may have known.

[ Carles Riba, First Book of Stanzas, Poem #7 | 1919 ]

Listen: Stanzas VII (2003) for String Orchestra, Trombones, Tuba, Timpani and Percussion. Orquesta de Valencia, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, conductor. Live Recording.
